Pearl Owens

Funeral services for Pearl Owens were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 at Bader Funeral Home in Lusk with Mark Lohr officiating. Burial followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Owens passed away on Friday, March 20, 1998 at the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital at Lusk.

She was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Fremont County, Iowa to Ruel E. and Mollie Pearl (Goff) Straight.

After receiving her education in Crawford, Nebraska, she helped care for two brothers while her parents worked away from home. She married Ray Owens on March 1941 in Plattsmouth, Nebr.

They worked on ranches in Montana and Nebraska and also cooked for the ranch hands.

Returning to Crawford, they bought a farm where they worked hand in hand raising cattle, selling dairy products and selling block ice.

To this union two children were born; Lola Mae (1942) and Larry Ray (1946)

In 1953 they moved to Lusk, where Pearl cooked in several cafes and at the Niobrara County school cafeteria.

After working at the school cafeteria she then went to Vic's Drive- In. They bought the business in 1961 and sold it in 1965.

After selling the business, Pearl and Ray retired and spent most of their time traveling and spending the winters in the California and Arizona area. Pearl loved life, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed doing yard work, making quilts, and afghans and following all of her children's activities. She also loved watching the Chicago Cubs with Harry Carey and the Colorado Rockies' baseball games.

The last eight years of her life were spent with family in Lusk and Cheyenne.

While battling poor health, she acquired many friends in the health care facilities. Prior to her death she returned home for four months where she was very happy.

Survivors include her daughter and a special son-in-law, Lola and Denny Dobson; a sister, Beulah Yarbrough and a brother Clarence Straight; grandchildren, Katherine Johnson, Kevin Dobson and wife Sandy of Lusk, Kris Phillips and husband Tod and Kim Ogren of Cheyenne; great-grandchildren, Steven Johnson, Laura and Vanessa Phillips and Ashley Amanda Marie Dobson; one step-daughter, Leatta and husband Jim Fueler of Craig, Colo.; two step-sons, Donald Owens of Lusk and Raymond Owens of Bremer, Wash.; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren plus a very treasured friend, Robert Thon of Montana.
