Thomas Steven Reed

Funeral services for Thomas Steven Reed, 69, were conducted at 2 p.m. on May 19 in Lander Community Center by Pastor Haliburton. Interment with military gravesides rites, was held in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander.

Born March 7, 1934, in his grandmother's house in Lusk, he was the son of Elizabeth Delia Akins and Earl Calvin Reed. He was raised on the Reed family ranch on the Cheyenne River, north of Lusk, and attended rural country schools.

His greatest achievement in high school was as a member of the 1949 national championship livestock judging team, a state honor that stood for 50 years.

He joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1953 and was stationed in Japan. After returning to the states, he served in Twenty Nine Palms, Calif.

During this time he married Ruth Ann Swope.

After receiving an honorable discharge, he and his wife returned to the family ranch on the Cheyenne River. They moved to Lander in 1958 and began ranching on North Second Street. In 1962, they moved to their ranch on Mill Creek.

He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 954, American Legion Richard Pogue Post No. 81 and the National Rifle Association. Once named farmer of the year, he was an honorary member of Future Farmers of America.

His greatest joys were spending time with his family and raising high-quality cattle.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Lander; a son, Tommy and his wife of Lander; a daughter Tami of Lander; three granddaughters and a grandson, all of Lander; a brother, Jim and his wife of the Cheyenne River community; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Shannon.
