Maude Upton

Funeral services for Maude Upton who passed away June 19, 1989, will be held Saturday, June 24, 1989 at 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church.

Adoshia Maude (Allen) Upton was born near Franklin, Neb., March 22, 1890, the daughter of Ethan and Mary Ellen (Johnson) Allen. She attended schools in Franklin County.

On Valentine's Day, 1912, she married Thomas Nela Upton of Franklin County and they moved to a ranch nearby where their daughter Mildred was born. In 1916 they moved to the Moore Springs community in Goshen County, Wyo. There their son Lawrence was born.

After many years on the ranch they moved to Torrington where they operated a small restaurant and later a furniture store. In the 1940s they moved to California and Idaho for a short time. But the 1950s found them in Wheatland, Wyo. There they operated a furniture store until Tommy's ill health compelled them to retire. He died in 1957 and Maude moved to Lusk to be near her daughter and family. She entered the Nursing Home in May, 1983.

Wherever she lived, Maude was interested in community life and had many friends.

In her 99 years she had gone from Horse & Buggy to the space age and enjoyed it all.

She was a member of Lusk Rebekah Lodge #12 for many years serving in all the offices in turn and in 1983 received the award of Wyoming Rebekah of the Year 1982-3. She was also a member of the Congregational Church, the Royal Neighbors and the Moore Springs Extension Club.

She is survived by her son Lawrence Upton, Homosassa Springs, Fla.; her daughter, Mildred and husband Eugene Tyrrel of Lusk; seven grandchildren: Thomas Upton and wife Judy of Florida; Marilyn Von Kaenel and husband Bob of Littleton, Colo.; Harvey Upton of Cheyenne; Carmen Shane and husband Jimmy of Node; Claude Tyrrel and wife Bonny of Worland; Karen Gaukel and husband Kenny of Keeline; Susan Severson and husband Terry of Rochester, Minn.; 19 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren and many, many friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, one grandson, three great-grandchildren, four brothers and eight sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Congregational Church or the Niobrara County Nursing Home.
