Eugene Arthur Tyrrel

Memorial services for Eugene Arthur "Gene" Tyrrel, 76, of Lusk will be held Thursday, March 11, 1993, at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Lusk with Rev. Allen Kallenbach officiating. Burial will be in the Lusk cemetery.

He was born at Wood Lake, Neb., on July 29, 1916, the son of Walter S. "Happy" and Josephine (Wehendel) Tyrrel. The family moved to a ranch 17 miles south of Lusk in 1920. He was raised there and attended school 10 years at Rawhide. He graduated from Lusk High School in 1933.

He was a 10-year member of the Royal Valley 4-H Club, winning a trip to Chicago on his Health Record books.

He married Mildred M. Upton on Feb. 9, 1936, at Ft. Laramie, Wyo. To this union four children were born. They moved to Torrington in 1937, operating a service station. He also worked in the G. W. Sugar beet factory and Valley Mercantile Hardware Store.

In 1941 they moved to Denver, Colo., and managed apartments. He worked in a Defense Plant during World War II. They returned to Torrington in 1944 where they painted houses.

In 1948 they returned to the ranch after the death of his mother. In 1953 they bought the Lusk Cold Storage and operated this business for 25 years. Tyrrel's Cold Storage was selected as the Niobrara Chamber of Commerce's Civic Leader of the Month in October 1992 for its contributions to the economy of Lusk. In 1961 the Tyrrels bought a ranch southwest of Lusk.

Gene served as a town councilman for 12 years and served on the Niobrara Senior Center board. He was a member of the Congregational Church, serving as a deacon and usher for many years. He was a 4-H leader and a member of Farm Bureau.

He was a versatile handyman and always was willing to cheerfully help anyone in need. His sense of humor and teasing will be remembered by all those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Lusk; one son and his wife, Claude and Bonny Tyrrel of Worland; three daughters and their husbands, Carmen and Jimmy Shane of Node; Karen and Kenneth Gaukel of Keeline and Susan and Terry Severson of Rochester, Minn.; his stepmother, Jane Tyrrel; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
