Richard Brece Whitmore was born May 11, 1907 in Dubois, Neb. He lived in western Nebraska until 1915 when he moved to Guernsey. In 1927 he joined the Navy and served over seas in China, Japan and the Philippine Islands. He and Helen Dengston were married August 4, 1931. Following his discharge from the Navy he served four years in the reserves and was called back to active duty during World War II. They were living in Hawaii at the out-break of the war. He was discharged in 1944.

During his naval service he was a torpedoman on a submarine and a deep sea diver. He also served as a machinist in Richmond, Calif. As a civilian he worked all over the country with construction work as a heavy equipment operator. He was injured while in the service and has spent much time in veteran's hospitals.

He is survived by his wife, Helen: one daughter, Mrs. Jannice Johnson of Lusk; one son, Richard, in the U. S. Navy in the Caribbean; his mother, Mrs. Grace Whitmore of Lusk; and one granddaughter.

Note:   The Lusk Cemetery records have Richard's middle name as Bruce. They also had the death date as May 26, 1964. In addition, his wife's obituary states her maiden name as Bengston, and Richard's middle name as Brece. We have changed our online cemetery records to coincide with the obituaries.
