Last Rites For A. S. Barker

The last rites for A. S. Barker, who for 38 years has been a resident of this community, were conducted from the Peet Chapel on Saturday afternoon, March 27.

Mr. Barker had been spending the winter at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ray S. Marshall, of Hollywood, Calif., and he passed away there on Wednesday, March 24 at the age of 84. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cornell of Lusk, had gone to California about two weeks ago when informed that Mr. Barker was very ill and Mr. Cornell had returned to Lusk on Wednesday of last week only a few hours before receiving word of Mr. Barker's death.

The remains were brought to Lusk and were accompanied by Mrs. Cornell and Mrs. Marshall and a son, Dale Barker, of Denver.

Alonzo Smith Barker was born in the Catskill Mountains of New York State on July 12, 1863. The family moved to Peoria, Illinois when Mr. Barker was a small child and he grew to manhood there, but came to southeastern Nebraska and finally located near Long Pine, where he was married to Minnie G. Miller. They are the parents of three children.

During the homestead rush of 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Barker and family moved to Lusk and located on a farm nine miles northeast of town. Mr. Barker became known as one of the most successful farmers in this part of the State and was actively engaged in this line of work until his advanced age caused him to retire, and for many years now had spent the winters with his daughter and her family in California.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cornell live on the old home place.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Lawrence Juell officiating. The songs, "Sweet Bye and Bye," "Buelah Land," and "Saved by Grace" were sung by Mrs. A. B. DeCastro, Miss Bessie Lumsden and Mrs. C. E. Marvin, accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson.

The remains were conveyed to their last resting place in the Lusk Cemetery by Ed Stigle, Gilbert Brinkerhoff, James Mudra, Frank Taylor, Emil Klemke, and Joe McConaughey. He was laid beside his wife, who passed away in 1922.

Surviving Mr. Barker are his two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Cornell of Lusk and Mrs. Audrey Marshall of Hollywood, Calif. and a son, Dale Barker, of Denver, Colo. Ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
