Howell F. (Burr) Bryant

Lifetime Lusk resident Howell F. (Burr) Bryant, 83, entered God's Kingdom on July 6, 2007. He was born in Lusk on Oct. 30, 1923, to Fred A. and Sylvania P. (Howell) Bryant. He attended school at the Hat Creek School and Niobrara County High School.

He was drafted into Military Service in 1943. Burr was with the 115th Infantry, 29th division, landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1946, where he was wounded. After recovering, he returned to France and was there until the end of war. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 21,1945, having received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and the Rifleman's Badge.

Burr married Winifred J. Ward, of Saratoga, in Rawlins, Jan. 25, 1949. They enjoyed 58 years together.

They lived in Encampment for five years while Burr worked in the timber industry. They then moved to Lusk. Burr spent most of his life on the family ranch at Hat Creek, having purchased it from his father in 1964. He and Wini retired in 1991, when they moved into Lusk. He did small jobs around town for many years. He worked for Annabelle Hoblit on her ranch, and was the custodian at the NEA for six years.

Burr was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Farm Bureau, a lifetime member of the Saratoga IOOF Lodge #34, Wieten-Dupes American Legion Post #4, Disabled American Veterans, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3511, the 29th Division Association Florida West Post #2 and a lifetime member of the 115th Infantry Regiment.

Burr will be remembered for his honesty, his willingness to help others, never meeting anyone he didn't like and his twinkling eyes and great sense of humor!

He is survived by his wife, Winifred, his daughter, Sally Bryant-(Michael) McGrew and his grandson, Gregory. Also surviving are five sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and a great many friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Sylvania, his infant son, James Howell Bryant, brothers George and John, sisters Iris, Evelyn, Tiny and Donna.

Memorials may be sent to the Bryant family, Box 627, Lusk, WY 82225. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Memorial services for Howell F. "Burr" Bryant, 83, will be held Sat., Aug. 11, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds Auditorium in Lusk, Wyo., with Pastor Tom Strock of the First Baptist Church of Lusk officiating.

A second memorial service will be held Mon., Aug. 13, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Evansville, Wyo. Inurnment with military rites will follow at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery.

Mr. Bryant passed away in Lusk July 6, 2007. A full obituary was printed earlier.

Pier Funeral Home of Lusk is in charge of the arrangements.
