Milton Bixler, Early Resident, Dies at Age 87

Milton Bixler, 87, early resident of Sioux County, died last Thursday morning in a Scottsbluff hospital after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held at Memorial Methodist Church in Harrison Saturday afternoon with the Rev. James Keith officiating. Burial was in the Harrison Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Cherry, Earl Cherry, Lyle Lewis, Russell Lewis, Raymond Riley, and Vernon Jones. Honorary pallbearers were Luther Koch, M. H. Koch, J. A. McClarey, Jim Phipps, Jack Broderick, W. E. Mumby, Vern Marsteller, Earl Hatch, George Wickersham, John Marking, and Tress Powell. Mrs. James Keith accompanied by Mrs. Robert Todd sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Mr. Bixler was born September 4, 1877 near Rockport, Ill., where he spent his early days. As a young man, he worked in a Colorado silver mine and later homesteaded a farm in Liberal, Kan., in 1900.

In 1909 he came with his family to Nebraska and homesteaded in Sioux County south of Harrison. He married Edna David of Harrison in 1915 and except for periods spent working in oil fields in Texas and Wyoming, resided on his ranch until 1946 at which time he retired and moved to Scottsbluff.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Panhandle Saddle Club, and was reared in the Baptist Church.

Six brothers and three sisters died previously. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Edna Bixler, one daughter, Mrs. Edward Cassels of Scottsbluff; one son, Monroe of Omaha; and three grandchildren, Meredith Jane and James Milton Bixler of Omaha, and Stephen Cassels of Scottsbluff.

Among the relatives and friends from out of town here for the funeral were: Mrs. and Mrs. Edward Cassels and Stephen of Scottsbluff, Mrs. And Mrs. Monroe Bixler and Jim of Omaha, Mrs. Rozetta Grand of Gering, Mrs. Dorothy Rossiter of Denver, Charles Schaefer of Scottsbluff, Mrs. Wanda Cooper and Miss Susan Cooper of Omaha, and Mrs. Jennie Bourret and James Bourret of Kimball.
