Irene Christine (Roth) Conrad

Irene Christine Conrad age 97, of Hot Springs, S.D., passed away Aug. 11, 2007 at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, S.D. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 16, 2007 at the LDS Church in Hot Springs, S.D. with Bill Daybrest officiating. Concluding services will be held at Lusk Cemetery in Lusk at 2:30 p.m.

Irene was born on Sept. 21, 1909 in Edgemont, S.D. to Ira and Christina (Peterson) Thomas of Hat Creek. Irene attended rural school in the Hat Creek and Red Bird area.

She entered into marriage Jan. 12, 1936 to Ira Roth, with a son, Charlie Stevenson from a previous marriage to John Stevenson. Ira and Irene had three children, two daughters and a son. They lived on various ranches until 1951 when they moved to Edgemont, S.D.

Irene worked in the restaurant business for eight years and when Ira retired from the Army Depot in Igloo, S.D., they moved to Little Falls, Minn. where they lived on a farm. When Ira's health failed they moved to Hot Springs, S.D. to be close to the VA Hospital. Irene then went to work at the VA in dietetics. After Ira passed away, she later married Gordon Conrad. In 1967 they moved to Reeder, N.D., to run a feedlot. They moved back to Edgemont, S.D. in 1969, and Irene opened a cafe, which she ran until shortly after Gordon's death in 1972. After selling her cafe, she worked at Stockman's Cafe, the Edgemont school lunchroom, and the Second Avenue Restaurant. After retiring from restaurant work she volunteered at the State Home and the VA medical center in the clothing room and library. She was active in the American Legion and Card Clubs.

Irene loved taking care of her family, always baking her wonderful pies, rolls and meals. She took great pleasure in serving family and friends. She enjoyed being an active member of the LDS Church and helping with the Brunswick stew.

She lived her remaining days at the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, S.D.

Irene is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (John) Curl of Edgemont, S.D.; Marlene (Mike) Finch of Milford, Minn.; one son, Thomas (Vonnie) Roth of Hot Springs, S.D.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Her husbands, Gordon Conrad and Ira Roth; son, Charlie Stevenson; parents, two brothers, one sister and one grandson preceded Irene in death.

A memorial has been established in Irene Conrad's name.
