Dorcas M. Bigelow

Funeral services for Dorcas ZumBrunnen Bigelow were held on July 11, 1988 at the United Methodist Church in Harrison, Nebraska with interment in the cemetery at Harrison. She died on July 7 at Sterling, CO.

Dorcas ZumBrunnen was born on March 25, 1892, the fifth child and second daughter of Jacob J. and Ida Jane (Williams) ZumBrunnen at the family homestead at Kirtley. Following the death of Ida Jane in December 1895, Jacob returned to his parents home in Wisconsin with his six small children. He married Eva Whipple and in 1896 returned to his Wyoming homestead.

Dorcas attended rural schools, graduating from Harrison High School in 1909; and joined the Methodist Church in Harrison in 1906 and was a loyal member for 82 years. She attended Normal School in Alliance, NE and taught five terms of rural schools, including Glen, NE, Story and Pine Knot, WY.

On July 12, 1914, Dorcas married Delmar J. Bigelow at her parents home at Kirtley, and traveled to his homestead three miles southeast of Harrison, where she lived until his death in 1951. She moved to Scottsbluff in October of that year until February 1987. Following a serious illness at that time, she made her home with a daughter in Sterling, CO. until her death.

Survivors are daughters Lucile Bigelow, Scottsbluff, Ione Hruza, Riverton, WY, and Clara Harmon, Sterling, CO; two sons; Eugene Bigelow of Boulder, CO. and Warren Bigelow of Laramie; daughters-in-law Iola Bigelow of Boulder, and Dottie Bigelow of Laramie; son-in-law Don Harman, Sterling; 12 grand-children, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; several nieces, and nephews and cousins in Wisconsin.

Mrs. Bigelow was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, husband Del, grand-daughter Janet Bigelow Hinkle; six brothers, one step-brother, two sisters, and two son-in-laws.

A skilled seamstress she sewed for the West Nebraska Hospital Auxiliary, and many garments for family and friends; also crocheting, tatting and knitting. Her family was her pride and joy, and she maintained an active interest in all of their activities.

Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or the Sioux county Historical Society of Harrison, or the donors choice.
