Roderick "Rod" Nathaniel Geisinger

Roderick "Rod" Nathaniel Geisinger passed away at Niobrara Health and Life Center on Feb. 25, 2008 - one day before his 85th birthday. He passed away of natural causes.

Memorial services were held March 2, 2008 at the Congregational Church in Lusk, with Pastor Mark Lohr officiating.

Rod was born on Feb. 26, 1923 to Glen and Valle Geisinger in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Storm Lake, as well as attended Buena Vista College while living there.

In 1958 he moved to Wyoming to go to work on the Manning Ranch near Lance Creek. On May 24, 1959, he married Carol Louise York of Niobrara County. Shortly after they married, they moved to the Hat Creek area to work for Henry and Edith McGinnis on their Hereford bull ranch.

In 1970, they purchased the ranch from the McGinnis', and the ranch officially became known as the "Diamond K Ranch" after the brand that Rod had designed. In 1980, the Geisingers were chosen by the University of Wyoming as one of three ranches featuring an integrated ranch management system. It was through this holistic approach that Rod and Carol ran their cattle and sheep operation. Rod would go on to win two "Outstanding Conservationist" awards in 1984 and 1985 for their rotational grazing system. Their ranch management program was presented in the Farmer-Stockman magazine in 2000 with Rod being featured on its cover. He also won several other awards during his career as a rancher, which included the Eastern Wyoming Hereford Association traveling trophy and the Outstanding Agriculturalist from the University of Wyoming.

Rod was a member of the Congregational Church, Elks Lodge, and Farm Bureau in Lusk. He was a 32nd degree and past Master Mason, and was also active in 4-H and Jobs Daughters programs. Rod served as a Niobrara County Commissioner from 1985-1993.

He is survived by his wife Carol; his daughters and their spouses: Robyn and Loren Heth of Lusk, and Tracy and Jeff Wasserburger of Gillette; and his five grandchildren: Logan and Rebecca Heth, and Jory, Trey and Hayley Wasserburger, all of whom he was extremely proud. He is also survived by one sister, Glenda Miwa of Tempe, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

The family suggests memorials to Niobrara Health and Life Center, PO Box 1444, Lusk, WY 82225.
