Flora Slaymaker, Early Resident Here Dies in California
Word of the death of Mrs. Flora Slaymaker at her home in Los Angeles, Calif., on Jan. 16th has been received by relatives here.
Mrs. Robert Darnell of Lusk is a granddaughter and Miss Alice Fowler her niece.
Mrs. Slaymaker was a pioneer resident of this part of Wyoming. She was born at Plattsmouth, Nebr., April 12, 1862 and came to the Wyoming Territory with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hobbs in 1888 and they settled on the Rawhide Creek south of Lusk.
She taught school at the Rawhide Buttes stage station and at a number of other schools along the creek until her marriage to Sam Slaymaker, Feb. 7, 1893 and the couple moved to Douglas, Wyo., to make their home.
They lived here for many years and their three children were born while they lived in Douglas. After Mr. Slaymaker's death the family moved to Manville and later to Lusk.
In 1929 Mrs. Slaymaker moved to California and a son and daughter reside in Los Angeles where Mrs. Slaymaker made her home.
She was a member of the Christian and although nearly 89 years of age did her own housework and was very active for one of her age. Death came suddenly to her on Tuesday of last week.
Funeral services were conducted there on Saturday, Jan. 20 and interment made in the Forest Lawn cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Wm. M. Slaymaker of Los Angeles and her two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Herwich of Los Angeles and Mrs. Nora Lamb of Midwest, Wyo., seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
