Harriet Louise (Call) Thompson

Memorial services for Harriet Louise (Call) Thompson, age 88, were held on April 13, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Lusk, with Pastor Mark Lohr officiating. She passed away at her home in Lusk April 9, 2008.

Harriet was born Jan. 10, 1920, to Shirley and Harriet (Eastman) Call in Douglas. She was one of six children, and attended school in Douglas. She worked at the "Five and Ten Cent" store until she married Jim Thompson on May 16, 1940. They then moved to Los Angeles for two years, where he worked for North American Aircraft Co. Next they moved to Lance Creek, where Jim went into the ranching business with his brother Leo. They moved twice more before settling on Cow Creek, where they were sheep and cattle ranchers. Harriet kept busy raising a garden to feed sheep shearers, branding crews and the hired help. Here they raised their two daughters, Jan and Waive. Harriet was always supporting the girls in 4-H and high school rodeos, plus other high school activities.

Through the years, Harriet was Past-President of the Sage Brush Extension Club; Past-President of the Republican Women's Club; Past-Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel number ten; worked with 4-H; was Past-President of P.E.O.; and Deacon of the Congregational Church. She also belonged to Group One Cowbells.

Harriet enjoyed playing the piano, where she, Jim, and Albert Glasby played for dances at the old Rochelle Hall. She loved playing cards, reading, and taking care of her friends. She was always there for family and friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Jan Bruegger of Keeline, and Waive Yager of Lance Creek; four grandsons; one granddaughter; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Johnson of Lafayette, Ind. Preceding her in death were her husband, four brothers, and her parents.

The family suggests memorials to the Niobrara County Library or to the Congregational Church of Lusk. Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
