Fern Hilda Wasserburger

Fern Hilda Wasserburger was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Armor, S.D., the third child of Charles H. and Alta Mae (Mills) Scott. She passed away Dec. 1, 2010, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyo.

She attended school in Verdel, Neb. Fern moved to Creighton, Neb., where she worked in a cafe. There she met James Burdick, whom she married in Verdel in 1943. Two children, Myrna and Robert, were born to this marriage. They later divorced.

In 1950 she married Elmer Hock. Two more children, Janet and Mickey, were born. The family traveled a lot, as Elmer worked construction work. They finally settled in Lusk, Wyoming, where Fern worked as a housekeeper for many years and many families.

In 1976 she married Ralph Wasserburger.

Fern was a loyal, active member of Lusk Drove #64 of the Benevolent, Patriotic, Order of DOES for many years, serving as President, then a member of the Past-Presidents. Her Drove and the Elks Lodge were a great joy in her life. For many years she decorated for different occasions, creating many of the decorations herself.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; her son Robert Burdick; her parents; sisters Violet Ebsen and Rose Ann Martin; brothers: Lloyd, Harvey, Laurence, and Floyd Scott; and one granddaughter, Becky Anne Burdick.

Fern is survived by her two daughters: Myrna Birkle and Janet Oliver; one son, Mickey; one sister, Karen Fernau; four brothers: John, Marvin, Vere Gene, and Earl Scott. She also leaves seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Pier Funeral Home in Lusk Dec. 7, 2010, with ceremonies conducted by Lusk Drove #64 of the Benevolent, Patriotic Order of DOES. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

A celebration of the life of Fern Wasserburger will be held in Lusk at 10 a.m., Dec. 7. 2010.

Fern's home has been at Shepherd of the Valley for six years. While there she became a guardian angel for other residence. She took care of them, helped them and loved them. She was an amazing woman with a huge caring, loving and generous heart. Family gatherings were so special to her. Hobbies she loved were cooking, fishing, rock hunting, gardening and her favorite was talking.

She is survived by three children, daughters, Myrna Birkle and Jan Oliver and son, Mickey Hock all of Casper; her sister, Karen; brothers, John, Marvin, Vere Gene and Earl Scott. Fern was graced with seven grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Preceding her were her husband, Ralph; son, Robert; her parents; two sisters and four brothers and one grand-daughter.
