Raymond J. Rumney

A service celebrating the life of Newcastle rancher Raymond J. Rumney, 74, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Gateway Fellowship Church (meeting at the Weston County Senior Center) with Pastor Jonathan Anderson officiating. The family appreciates all memorial contributions given to Gideon Bibles or the Weston County Senior Center.

Mr. Rumney died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011 at the Rumney ranch North of Newcastle.

He was born Feb. 3, 1937 at Hot Springs, South Dakota the son of James Edward Rumney and Gladys Black Rumney. He attended the Cheyenne River Country School and graduated from Lusk High School in 1954 within just eleven years of schooling. He served in the U. S. Army from 1959 to 1964. On December 20, 1969, he married Betty Anna Slagle at Lusk, Wyoming. Ray enjoyed work and had tried several different enterprises over the years. He was primarily a rancher. In addition to ranching he was a school bus driver after returning from the service, mail truck driver from Newcastle to Cheyenne, and a bus driver for the coal miners employed by Jacobs Ranch Mine between Newcastle and the mine.

Ray always attended a Bible believing church. He was saved through his praying grandfather. As a youth he was active in 4-H and made two trips to Chicago as one of the members of Wyoming State 4-H Judging Team. Ray was very intelligent, and an avid reader. He could fix anything and had an amazing memory. He learned to use and build computers simply by reading the manual. He used his mechanical aptitude to build his own boat and a radio. He loved to fly his airplane, which his whole family enjoyed. He was also a military sharpshooter. He was very patient and faithful to his family. He believed it was always a team effort working on income tax preparations for Rumney Accounting.

Surviving him are his wife Betty Anna Slagle Rumney, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Jean La Tosh of Scott City, Kansas; a brother Dean Rumney of Denver, Colorado, and daughters Terri Lynn Peterson, Nancy Kay Rumney, Sandra Lee and Richard Pfaff, Harriet and Brian Birkley; he has eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his father James Edward, mother Gladys Black and brother James Edward.
