Darold Harrington Killed in Naval Base Explosion

Last rites were held for Darold Harrington, carpenter's mate second class, at the Peet Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, January 10th.

C/M Darold Harrington, 20, husband of the former Phoebe Guibault of this city, was killed in an explosion at Wilmington-San Pedro, Calif., Pacific States Refinery Company, at the naval owned base, on Thursday morning, January 4th.

The remains were brought to Lusk and were accompanied by his wife, who has been residing in Long Beach, Calif., so that she might be near her husband.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock at the Peet Chapel, with Rev. Lawrence Juell officiating.

Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of O. P. Harnagel, Dan Christian, Phyllis Johns and Mrs. H. J. Templeton, who sang "Rock of Ages," and Rev. Gilbert Henderson rendered a solo, "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. J.P. Watson was the accompanist.

Grave-side services were conducted by members of Derk J. Weiten Post No. 4 of the American Legion, and he was buried with military honors.

Those who bore the remains to the final resting place were Merrill Smith, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Vaughan, Earl Helms, Robert Linville, Laverne Cadwallader, Robert Cadwallader and Ensign Bernard Tadewald.

Darold Lloyd Harrington was born July 11, 1924, near Gordon, Neb., the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harrington. While still a small boy the family moved to Torrington, Wyo., and later to Lance Creek. He attended the Manville High School and enlisted in the navy when 17 years of age, taking his Navy training at San Diego. He was sent overseas in 1942.

He told very little of his life in the service, but it is known that he participated in at least three major engagements. He had been awarded the Purple Heart and the President's citation.

Mate Harrington was on leave when the accident happened.

On July 29, 1944, he was married to Miss Phoebe Guibault at Long Beach, Calif.

Besides his wife he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harrington of Lance Creek; one sister, Dorothy, and four brothers, Leo, Micky, Eddie and Jimmy, all of the family home.
