Clyde Scott Gibbs Killed in Accident

Clyde Scott Gibbs, 30, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gibbs of northeastern Niobrara County, was killed Aug. 1 near Kimball, Neb., when a load of pipe on his truck crushed against his head.

Gibbs, an employee of the Rogers truck line of Sidney, Neb., was driving in the oil field section near Kimball, when he stopped his truck and got out to put a suitcase in the open front of the trailer. As he stepped between the cab and trailer the truck rolled backward a few feet into a truck being loaded with heavy materials. The impact sent the pipe on Gibbs' trailer smashing forward and crushed his head against the cab.

Funeral services were conducted from the McColley Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Aug. 4 and interment was in the Greenwood cemetery.

Clyde Scott Gibbs was born November 17, 1924 at Custer, S.D. Later his family lived in Lusk for several years, moving to northeastern Niobrara County about 1931. He attended the Lusk and Newcastle schools and was graduated from the Newcastle High School in 1942. Shortly afterwards he went to Texas. He joined the United States Army Air Force in 1943. While serving in the European Theatre of operations he was shot down over Germany but escaped into Russia. For this action in battle he was awarded a service medal. In 1946 he received his honorable discharge and returned to Newcastle.

He married Miss Dianne Turpin September 19, 1949 in Rapid City. At various times he and his family have lived in Laramie, Newcastle and Tioga, N.D.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Dianne Gibbs and his two children, Gerald Scott Gibbs, 4 and Janice Marie Gibbs, 2, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gibbs; one sister, Mrs. Katherine Ellis of Newcastle; two brothers, John of Newcastle and Alfred of New Haven, Conn. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Katie Gibbs; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kipping, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
