Funeral services for Fred Hamaker were held at the United Methodist Church in Crawford, Thursday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Lewis officiating. Burial was in the Crawford Cemetery.

Fred Hamaker was born to David W. Hamaker and Hannah Belle Martin Hamaker March 3, 1917, at the ranch home south of Andrews, where he attended elementary school in rural District No. 53. At the age of 13 he developed a severe case of pneumonia which left one lung badly infected. He spent most of the year in hospitals at Hot Springs, SD, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where they had to remove part of the lung and part of five ribs. After quite a lengthy recuperation he attended high school while living with an aunt and uncle at Hope, ND. After graduation he helped his folks run the ranch in Sioux County. He was about the first to get away from raising Hereford cattle by introducing the Black Angus into that area. During that time he also worked at the Crawford Livestock Auction Market and the Livestock Auctions in Harrison and Lusk and Douglas, Wyoming.

On October 29, 1938 he was married to Goldie Locker at Alliance. They have two sons, David W. of Lusk, WY and Criss F. who has operated the home ranch since Fred and Goldie retired and moved to Crawford in 1974. For six years he maintained roads and built bridges in Dawes County. When he retired from that he took up the hobby of tanning hides and braiding it into ropes. He also braided bridles and reins and made ropes for bull riding. Fred was fond of country-western music, and organized his family into a little band who entertained at many of the local dances.

He was affiliated with Masonic Sioux Lodge No. 277, Alliance Scottish Rites, Order of Eastern Star Sioux Chapter No. 319, and Eagles Pine Ridge Aerie No. 3601.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie, sons David and wife Judy, Criss and wife Ruth, six grandchildren and sisters Ruth Dyer, Bakersfield CA, and Dorthy Meredith of Hemingford, also numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and two brothers-in-law.
