James S. Potter

Funeral services for James S. Potter were held Thursday, May 19 at Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk. Mr. Potter, 82, of Lusk, died peacefully in his sleep on May 16.

Jim was born August 8, 1921 to Dolly Ann and James S. Potter of Nebraska. He attended his school years in Lusk and graduated in 1940. In 1944 he married Florence Ruth Patterson in Compton, Calif. In 1941 he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the U.S.S. Jackson as a cook and gunner. An Honorable Discharge was given to Jim in 1946.

Jim's longest career was at Safeway, he retired in 1976 after 28 years, 18 years in Lusk.

Jim believed he was too young to retire and tried several other "careers" before his death. He worked on the oilrigs, tried his hand at carpentry for a few years, ran his own sawmill, and finally settled on the sweeter things in life and raised honeybees and sold the honey.

His hobbies included collecting coins, buckles, banks and trains. He loved to fish and to share his enthusiasm for his hobbies with school children and adults alike. There was never a person Jim could not speak with. He enjoyed telling stories about his Navy ship days, sometimes telling them over and over to anyone who would listen.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Florence; three children - Janette Pomeroy and husband Norman of Lusk; James D. Potter of Lusk and Judy Martin and husband Jon of Lusk. Jim was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one brother Harold Potter of Byron, Wyo., and a half-sister Bernice Summers of Prescott, Ariz.

The family has asked that any memorial contributions be made to the Lusk Ambulance Services.
