Last Rites Held For Ferd Holtz

Funeral services for Ferdinand Holtz who died November 21 were held November 23 from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Harrison with the Rev. Harold Vetter of Crawford officiating. Burial was in the Harrison Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ted Davis, Melvin Grote, Walter Zerbst, Adolph Zurcher, Morris Engebretsen, and Jerry Witt. Honorary pallbearers were Luther Koch, John Marking, Bill Grote, J. A. McClarey, Martin Koch, Tress Powell, and John Vantine.

Music was provided by Mrs. Morris Engebretsen singing two of Mr. Holtz' favorite songs, "God Will Take Care of You" and "Abide With Me." She was accompanied by Mrs. Albert Rabe, organist.

Mr. Holtz was born April 5, 1875, the son of Ferdinand and Johanna Holtz, in Germany and came to the United States when he was 11 years old. He lived with his sister, Mrs. August Geike, and her husband for a time and later went to Schuyler where he was employed. While there he met and married Maria Settgast on April 2, 1902, the wedding being performed in the Schuyler Lutheran Church.

In 1904 they moved to Sioux County where they took a homestead 12 miles northwest of Harrison which is now owned and operated by their son Paul. They moved to their present home in Harrison in 1944. They had two children, Paul and Esther, she dying in June 1921.

In 1952 Mr. and Mrs. Holtz observed their golden wedding anniversary at the Harrison Lutheran Church.

"Ferd" as he was generally known was the last of the Holtz family of nine children. There were four sisters, Amelia, Bertha, Marie and Johanna, and four other brothers, Frank, Carl, Julius, and August.

He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Germany and was confirmed in Lockport, Ill.

Surviving are his widow, the son Paul, and four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Those from away attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. George Settgast and Mrs. Ed Engel, Columbus, Nebr.; Mrs. Ivan White and daughters Sharon and Susan and Mrs. Wilma Peters, Ainsworth; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zerbst, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffman, Mrs. Elmer Lambert, Marsland; Darrold Lambert, Whitney; Mr. and Mrs. John Vantine, Mrs. DeGunia and three sons, Crawford; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Geike, Mrs. Carrie Burke and John Burke, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zerbst, Mr. and Mrs. Durl Holtz, Lusk; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ladwig and children, Manville, Wyo.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hutchinson and son, Dubois, Wyo.
