Pioneer Legrand Lee dies

Legrand Monroe (Dick) Lee died after a long illness at the Veteran's Hospital at Hot Springs, S.D., August 11, 1977.

The son of Orin and Martha Knight Lee was born October 5, 1898, at Naper, Nebraska, living there until the family moved by covered wagon to the Jireh and Keeline area where he attended school.

In June 1918 he and a brother, Enos, enlisted at Camp Fremont, California, in the field artillery joining older brothers Clair and Hardy. The four brothers then shipped out for active duty in France where he remained until discharged in February 1919. Mr. Lee was a member of the American Legion, Wieten Dupes Post No. 4, of Lusk, Wyoming.

September 15, 1920, he married Ruby B. Baker, homesteading near Powder River, Wyoming; moving north to Keeline in 1925 he continued ranching until moving to Lusk in 1960.

Being a great lover of horses and livestock he enjoyed the outdoors, training and running race horses and also helping with the REA in its infancy here.

July 10, 1976, he was honored with a plaque at the Lost Springs Bicentennial Celebration for winning the saddle bronc contest there July 4, 1926.

Survivors include his widow Ruby B., daughter Darlene Martin, son Steve L. Lee, four grandchildren: Clay and Ty Lee, Keeline; Ivol Martin, Centralia, Wash. and Fairy Flitcraft, Powell; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; sisters Mrs. Nell Jardine, North Highlands, Calif.; Mrs. Winnie Hampton, Twin Falls, Idaho; Roma Burd, Elma, Wash.; brothers Enos Lee, Buffalo; and Tom Lee, Olympia, Wash.

Preceding him in death were daughters Donna Stephens and Edna Lee, two sisters and three brothers.

The service was conducted by Rev. Frank Bozart at the Peet Mortuary Monday and the music provided by Jane Bardo and Tim Johnson. Pallbearers were Joe Jones, Bernard Thon, Wilbur Wright, Everett Parmely, Warren Freeman and Bill Nuttall.

Burial was at Jireh Cemetery.
