Kenneth Herbert Mangis

Kenneth Herbert Mangis, 85, died Saturday morning, March 16, 1996, at his home, 220 Foster Lane, in Billings.

Herb was born in McLeansboro, Ill., to John and Linna Mangis, on Feb. 17, 1911. Shortly after, he moved with his parents to teach school in Lame Deer. At age four the family moved to a homestead in Phillips County. He attended school in Malta.

He married Gladys Olson in Billings on Oct. 11, 1936. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 11, 1986. Gladys died in January 1988.

Herb worked for Marathon Oil in Lovell and Lance Creek, Wyo., retiring in 1971, when he and Gladys moved to Billings. He was an active member of Evangelical United Methodist Church, rarely missing a Sunday. He faithfully delivered food donations from the church to the Food Bank each month. He volunteered as a director for the Montana Rescue Mission, was a member of the Yellowstone Historical Society, and York and Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge.

Herb enjoyed good health and was happiest spending time with his family and friends. He was always available when help was needed and drove many miles chauffeuring to and from the airport.

His family includes son and daughter-in-law, Herbert J. and Gerry Mangis of Billings; son and daughter-in-law, Richard R. and Beverly of Yuma, Ariz.; grandchildren, Carmen of Denver, Karen of Flagstaff, Ariz., Rodney J. of Billings, Jeffrey of Grover Beach, Calif., and Jennifer of Tucson, Ariz.; and five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ned and Margaret Mangis of Malta, Mont. and his sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Rolf Johnson of Bozeman, Mont., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Vern Mangis of Malta and sister, Dorothea Hurlburt of Billings. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at Evangelical United Methodist Church. Should friends desire, memorials may be given to his church or the Montana Rescue Mission. Smith Funeral Chapels is in charge of arrangements.
