John Moore Killed in Unusual Accident Friday

John Moore, 41, a life-long resident of Lance Creek, was killed in an accident at Lance Creek at 3:00 p.m. Friday. He was evidently hit by a large cottonwood tree which he and Pat Kant were cutting down.

An autopsy gave internal hemorrhaging as the cause of death. Mr. Moore, Bob Blaney and Pat Kant were working to remove the large tree between two pumps north of the Continental Gas Plant. The men had stripped the tree of limbs. At the time of the accident Mr. Blaney had left to get other tools. The exact details of the accident will likely never be known because Mr. Kant did not witness it. The winch truck used in removing the tree had apparently been fastened in such a way that the tree was top heavy. When it was cut through, the tree evidently switched ends and struck Mr. Moore.

Funeral services were held from the Peet Chapel in Lusk, Monday afternoon with Richard Korns, of the Lance Creek Community Church officiating. Mrs. Korns sang "How Great Thou Art" and "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow."

Military rites were conducted by the graveside by the Lance Creek V.F.W.

Pallbearers were Harold Wilkison, Jack Hammond, Bob Blaney, Roy Gries, Warren Walter and Clem Mosier.

John Moore Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Moore Sr. October 11, 1924. He received his education in the Lance Creek Schools and during World War II served in Germany. He and Jeanette Briscoe were married October 1, 1947. They made their home on a ranch five miles south of Lance Creek.

An active member of the Lance Creek Community Church he taught a church school class. He worked with the Pine Bluffs 4-H Club and the Lance Creek P.T.A.

Besides his widow, survivors include three children, Rita, Randy and Yodi, all of Lance Creek; one sister, Mrs. Annabelle (Floyd) Wilkison of Lance Creek; two brothers, Lee of Lance Creek and Raymond of Osage. His parents died previously.
