Last Rites held for Verda Barkus

Funeral service for Mrs. L.E. Barkus was held April 25 at Memorial United Methodist Church in Harrison at 2:00 p.m. She had died on April 22 at West Nebraska General Hospital in Scottsbluff following an extended illness.

The Rev. Larry Shrout officiated at the service. Escorts were Fred Hamaker, Criss Hamaker, Jess Locker, Charles Lee, Clarence Schnurr and Ord Anstey. Honorary escorts were E. E. Whiteaker, Frank Cherry, Tress Powell, J. A. McClarey, Art From, Marquis Hughson and Robert Mann.

Verda Barkus, daughter of Fred and Pearl Pullen, was born on August 21, 1917 at Glenn and was raised in Sioux County. She married L. E. "Monk" Barkus on August 17, 1935 at Hot Springs, S.D. Four children were born, one son and three daughters.

She is survived by her husband, one son, Donald of Morrill; three daughters, Mona Scott of Mandan, N.D., Theone Quintard of Long Beach, Calif., Aletha Gladson of Lusk; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest and Elmer Pullen, four sisters, Edna Baker, Dorothy Plunkett, Mabel Wasserburger and Leona Dout.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brother, Archie and Alfred, and one sister Fern.

Verda was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 319 and the Harrison United Methodist Church.

D.; Mrs. and Mrs. Edwin Barkus, Glenwood, Iowa.
