Charles F. Sheaman

(Fred) Charles F. Sheaman, 87, a 1918 area homesteader, died December 10 at the Converse County Memorial Hospital.

Charles F. Sheaman was born November 17, 1893, in Butler Valley, Pa., the son of Samuel and Christina Sheaman. He grew up around Neskehomi, Pa., where he worked in the coal mines. In 1909, he moved with his family to Traer, Iowa.

Charles Sheaman and Myra M. Whannel were married in Granada, Minn., March 14, 1916, in a triple wedding. Fred homesteaded in the Mule Creek area in 1918 with he and wife moving there in 1919. The couple moved to Lance Creek in 1920, going back to the homestead and then moving to Manville. About 1936, the Sheamans and their children, Alice and Paul, moved to Lance Creek where Mr. Sheaman was employed with Marathon (Ohio) Oil Company until he retired in 1958. After retiring he moved to Manville where he lived until his death.

Funeral services were held December 13 at Peet Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Henry Babis officiating. Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 24 conducted special services.

Organist was Edna DeCastro with Mrs. Carolyn Hammond and Mrs. Cindy Mosier singing "My Jesus As Thou Wilt" and "Abide With Me."

Active bearers were Richard T. Barnette, Paul Percival, Pete Hansen, Richard Kant, Dale Fullerton and Richard James. Honorary bearers were Clarence Mason, Don Foxhaven, Hugh McLean, Henry Stiles, John Overman, Bert Jones, C. E. Marvin, William Welch and Menno Kaan.

Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Lance Creek or Manville Community Church or Niobrara Memorial Hospital.

Sheaman was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 24 A.F. & A.M., being master of the Lodge in 1943. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Niobrara Chapter No. 26, Mariposa Electa Club, Historical Society and the Lance Creek Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Myra in 1978. Survivors include his daughter, Alice of Manville, son Paul and his wife Clarice of Sidney, Neb., two grandchildren, Mike and Theresa, one brother Harry Sheaman of Edgemont and many nieces and nephews and friends.

Sheaman Funeral

Many from this community paid their last respects to Fred Sheaman, long-time resident of Lance Creek and Manville, Saturday afternoon at the Peet Mortuary in Lusk. Mr. Sheaman died at the Converse County Hospital in Douglas, December 10.

Former field residents attending were Bess and Margaret Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Linden Nelson of Torrington., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Petty and Joni of Sidney, Nebraska and Mr. and Mrs. Don Emery of Douglas.
