Richard (Dick) A. Brashear

Richard A. Brashear, a resident of Lusk for the past 21 years, died Saturday at the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Richard, or Dick as he was better known, was born in Hamburg, N. Y., January 21, 1912, to Ayres and Mabel Brashear.

He spent most of his childhood on the Brashear farms in Mitchell Valley west of Scottsbluff. In 1931 he graduated from the Scottsbluff High School and in 1933 he enrolled in Chadron State Teachers College. In the fall of 1937 he gave up his studies to return to the family farm to take over its operation after the death of his father.

On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1938, Richard Brashear and Margaret Heaton of Hay Springs, Neb., were married. They were the parents of two daughters, Bonnie and Judy.

The family resided in Mitchell Valley until 1949 when they moved to a farm west of Wheatland. They sold this property in 1958 and Dick became a trainee of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in Platte County. In 1959 he moved his family to Lusk where he became the office manager for Niobrara County and he served in this capacity for nine years. After this he worked at various occupations until his retirement in June of 1997. For the last three years he and Margaret have enjoyed their home in Lusk through the summer months and the winter months have been spent in a retirement community in Mesa, Ariz.

Dick was a member of the United Church of Christ of Lusk, the Masonic Lodge of Scottsbluff and the Niobrara County Golfers Association. He was a past member of the Lusk Elks Lodge and served as exalted ruler in 1960-61.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter Bonnie Jenkins and granddaughters Danne' and Leshia Searle; daughter Judy Steffan and granddaughter Stephanie.
