Another Pioneer Gone

A gloom was cast over our city last Sunday morning when it was announced that Allen Niver, one of our old and respected citizens, had entered that sleep from which no traveler ever returns. He had been sick but a few weeks and it was hoped that he would finally recover, although his friends lost hope more than a week before the final spark had fled. His brooding over the death of his son, Ward, which occurred only six weeks ago, and his strong desire to depart and be with his wife, who died about five years ago, is thought to have hastened his end.

Deceased had lived in this place for about 12 years, during which time he gained the confidence and admiration of a host of friends who are deeply pained over his death. During this time he was engaged in a number of occupations and at the time of his death was clerking for the Barron Mercantile Company of this place, a position he held for the past four years. As a public officer he served the people faithfully and conscientiously, having been city alderman, mayor, police judge and justice of the peace. He was a member of the First Congregational church of this place and liberally aided its charities and worship and was ever ready to help the poor and needy.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Nellor, the place being crowded with people who came to pay their last respects to the dead. Deceased leaves a daughter, Mrs. Ed Mathis, two brothers and a sister, as well as numerous other relatives, both here and in other states, to mourn his departure. Had he lived until next April he would have reached his 60th birthday. In all he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and this entire community joins us in wishing peace to his soul in that haven of blissful rest.
