Lloyd Quintard

Lloyd Quintard passed away on July 7, 2011, he was 73 years old. The cause of death was a heart attack. His ashes were buried in the family cemetery on the Quintard Ranch near Harrison, Nebraska.

He was born Oct. 4, 1937, to Merrill Quintard and Gertrude Jordan-Quintard about 9 miles east of Harrison, Nebraska, on what was known as the Bessy Case Place. He grew up in the same area on the Dan Jordan [Quintard] Ranch where the original family homestead was established in 1889 by Lloyd's great-grandmother, Sarah McCoy-Jordon. Sarah, a widow with eight children, soon became a skillful business woman acquiring more land, most of which is still owned by the family today. Lloyd, his parents and four siblings all lived in a one-room bunkhouse on the ranch while the "big house" was being built. They moved into the big house in 1947 where they rode out the famous "Blizzard of 1949". The children attended a one room country schoolhouse and then moved to town to complete high school.

In 1956, he enlisted in the Marines at Camp Pendleton California. A year later he married his high school sweetheart, Theone Barkus. They had two children, Debbie and Doug. Lloyd served in the Marines for three years and then returned to Nebraska. In 1967 he packed up his family and headed back to California to work as a motorcycle mechanic and continued to pursue his passion for motorcycle racing holding several expert first place titles in motocross.

After 18 years of marriage, Lloyd and Theone divorced. Lloyd decided to escape the bustle of the big city and head for the quiet slow paced life of Topock, Arizona. Quiet and slow not truly his nature, he opened up a bar and grill in 1987 called the Silver Dollar Saloon, which is still open today. He also purchased his first two-passenger airplane and became a flight instructor. During that time he met Sallie Sue Dyerly. They married in 1994 at the Legend of Rawhide in Lusk, Wyoming. The only couple to be officially married during the Pageant's wedding ceremony. Wanting to avoid the harsh Nebraska winters, they became snowbirds between Harrison and Topock, Arizona.

Lloyd yearned for the days of the ol' Wild West and during his life owned a team of shires and mules and horse drawn wagons, including a stage coach he built himself. He ran a business called Quintard's Quest offering covered wagon trips and over-night camp outs.

Lloyd and Sallie built their home on the Quintard Ranch log-by-log with their own hands complete with a wood burning cook stove. They continued to run the Silver Dollar Saloon and had many other business ventures including the opening of Sallie Sue's Roadside Dinner in Harrison in 2008. Sadness came when Sallie passed away in 2009 after a brief battle with cancer.

Lloyd, still a snowbird between Harrison and Topock, continued to operate the Silver Dollar until he sold it in 2010. Although he hadn't flown in many years, he again took up flying and soared through the desert skies winning first prize in a local air race! He returned to his home and family in Harrison for the summer. The night before he died, he was in Deadwood, South Dakota, gambling and winning jackpots!

He is survived by his daughter Debbie Quintard-Aldcroft of Long Beach, California, son Doug Quintard of Topock, Arizona, five grandchildren, his sister Barbara Joss of Lusk, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Theone Barkus-Quintard, his wife Sallie Dyerly-Quintard, his brother Bruce Quintard and his sister Loretta Serres.

He lived his life his way. As a thrill seeker, racing motorcycles and flying. As an old cowboy and muleskinner. As a gambler, leaving this life on a jackpot! He loved his family and friends, and they loved him and will always treasure their stories and memories of Lloyd Quintard. Because he did it his way ...
