Dr. Edgar A. Chenoweth

1923-2011

Dr. Edgar A. Chenoweth, 87, died Jan. 11 in Houston.

Ed was born in Worland, on Aug. 2, 1923. His parents were Alva and Lela Chenoweth. Dr. Chenoweth taught psychology at the University of Wyoming for more than 40 years, and lived in Laramie for many years until health required his move to Houston.

A natural athlete, Ed loved the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and skiing. He was involved with boy scouts as a child. At Worland High School, he played both football and basketball. He then went to the University of Wyoming on a football and academic scholarship. Like many of his generation, his schooling was interrupted by World War II, and he served in the Army Air Corps as a cryptographer in the South Pacific.

He returned to UW after the war, receiving his bachelor's and his master's in psychology. He also met the love of his life, Carol Jean Held. They were married in September 1949, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where in 1954 he received his doctorate in experimental psychology from Ohio State University. Ed returned to UW as a member of the psychology faculty in the fall of 1954, and remained there until his retirement in 1992.

Family was Ed's top priority. As his three girls grew up during the 1950s and 1960s, Ed also performed in a number of plays, served as an Elder and a Deacon of the United Presbyterian Church and was a member of Kiwanis. He also served on the faculty senate and as a thesis advisor to many students. After retiring, he and his wife, Carol, enjoyed square dancing and traveling around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Carol Held Chenoweth.

He is survived by sisters Eva Taylor of Utah and Alice Kraft of Enid, Okla.; daughter Karen Chenoweth and husband Delmar Maxwell of Broomfield, Colo.; daughter Linda Chenoweth and husband Chris Faucette of Canyon, Texas; daughter Janet Lockhart and husband Brent of Cypress, Texas; grandchildren Allison Ivy, Larissa Kimble, Sean and Caitlin Lockhart, and Krista Faucette; great-granddaughter Claire Marie Ivy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Jason Harshberger officiating. Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by Laramie Veteran's Honor Guard and The Wyoming National Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the scholarship program of the University of Wyoming Psychology Department, 135 Biological Science Building, University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, 82071, 307-766-6303.
