The Slabaughs are model Amish farmers in “Breaking Silence” by Linda Castillo. When adult family members are found dead in the barn, it appears to be a gruesome accident: methane gas asphyxiation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit. But, in the course of a routine autopsy the coroner discovers one of the victims suffered a head wound before death. Kate Burkholder, the chief of police who had grown up Amish, thinks this case might be related to the recent string of hate crimes against the Amish. The state sends in John Tomasetti to help Kate. Together they search for the link between the crimes – and uncover a dark secret. Castillo has two other books in this page-turning suspense series.
