Vernard "Vern" Emmit Marsteller
Vern Marsteller, Lifelong County Resident, Dies
Vernard Emmit Marsteller, 74, native of Harrison and son of one of the true pioneer families of Sioux County, died Friday at the Crawford Hospital following a lingering illness.
He was born August 1, 1894, in Harrison, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John E. Marsteller. John Marsteller had come to Sioux County in 1885 from Pennsylvania and homesteaded a half mile north of what is now Harrison. He was a carpenter and built a number of the early buildings as Harrison the town developed following the coming of the railroad in 1886.
Vern was the second child of the family, all of the children being born at Harrison. From 1915 to 1933 he was in partnership with his father in the general merchandise store of Marsteller & Son.
He married Nell Anderson July 8, 1917 at Harrison, and she survives him. They had no children.
Vern was a veteran of World War I, and served as clerk of the draft board for World War II. He was a member of the Methodist Church and served as secretary of Masonic Lodge 277 for a number of years.
He began work for the Sioux National Bank July 1, 1945, and retired as president in 1962.
Surviving besides his wife are two sisters, Bessie Alexander and Byrdice Hopkins of Pueblo, Colo., and a brother, John W. Marsteller of Harrison.
Funeral services were held from Memorial Methodist Church at Harrison on Monday afternoon, and burial in the Harrison Cemetery.
