Virgil Martin

Memorial service for life-long resident Virgil Martin was held at Peet Mortuary Chapel last Thursday, April 21. The Rev. Frank Blish officiated. Burial followed at the Lusk Cemetery.

Martin died suddenly April 18. He was born in Crawford, Neb., May 2, 1913, the oldest of six children of George and Florence Sowers Martin. Reared in the Lusk area, Martin remained here throughout his life. He married Anna Marie James, July 15, 1934, in Chadron. Martin ranched in the area until 1953 when he became employed at the Lusk Standard Station. He later owned the station, which he sold upon his retirement in 1979.

Edna DeCastro was organist for the service. Mark Lohr, soloist, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Sweet By and By."

Pallbearers were Cye Bonner, Floyd Bartos, Rob Sides, Wayne Bible, Clarence West and Henry Wasserburger. Interment was in Lusk Cemetery.

A coffee at the Baptist Church was hosted by the ladies of the Lutheran Church.

Martin is survived by his wife Anna, Lusk and five children, two sons James, Oxnard, Calif., William, Lusk; and three daughters, Virgina Blackmore, Cheyenne, Verda Sue Bartlett, Ogema, Wisc., and Victoria Kennedy, Casper; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include brothers Andy, Alexandria, Neb., and Earl, Reno, Nev.; and three sisters, Opal Plumb, Lusk, Pearl Chrisman, San Diego, Calif. and Ila Margagliano, Washington, D.C.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Virgil Jr.

A memorial to the heart fund was established by the family.
