Jim Reed Takes Own Life Tues.

E. C. (Jim) Reed, 61, a Niobrara resident for 36 years, took his own life at l:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home on south Pine Street. He had been ill with sclerosis of the liver for more than six years.

Funeral service will be held from the Peet Chapel in Lusk at 2:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Jim of Lusk and Tom of Lander; brothers, Ray of Lance Creek, Joe of Watford City, N.Dak; sister, Mrs. Frankie Hern of Douglas; Mrs. Fay Russell of Cheyenne.

His parents and one brother, Walter died previously.

Services For Jim Reed Held In Lusk Friday

The Rev. James Davis officiated at funeral services for Earl C. (Jim) Reed Friday Aug. 9 from the Peet Chapel at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Reed, 61, took his own life August 6.

Mrs. A. F. DeCastro, organist, accompanied Mrs. Opal Templeton, Mrs. Maude Bonner, Bob Huey and Bill Huey as they sang "The Old Rugged Cross." Bob and Bill also sang "The Last Roundup."

The Lusk B.P.O. Elks held graveside services.

Active pallbearers were Russell Christensen, Pat Marchant, Gene Francis, Jesse York, Reuben Boatright, Franklin Mahnke, Art Dalgarno, Albert Glasby.

Honorary pallbearers were: Jack Parsons, Everett Bird, John Black, C. E. Marvin, Bud Black, W. O. Hanson, Charles Hanson, Ab DeCastro, Ray DeGering, Allie Mahnke, Harry Vickory, Cuz Oliver, Chris Christensen, Paul McDaniels, Mike Miller, Peach Shaw, Ralph Scott, Joe Garst, Joe Reynolds, Don Emery, Henry McGinnis, Wilmer Wampler, Glen Hanson, Ross Barnes.

Earl C. Reed son of Effie M. and Walter C. Reed, was born in Harrison, September 12, 1901. His early life was spent on a ranch south of Harrison. He attended Harrison public schools until the family moved to Weiser, Idaho.

In 1913 he moved to Lusk with his family where he lived until early manhood when he moved to a ranch north of Douglas which is now owned by Leroy Moore.

Mr. Reed rode with roundup wagons in the days when there were no fences and in 1927, with his father and brother, bought the 7L ranch in northern Niobrara County. He lived here until six years ago when illness forced him to retire.

January 17, 1931 he was married to Elizabeth Atkins. They were the parents of two sons, James C. of Lusk and Thomas S. of Lander.

He was baptized in the Methodist Church of Harrison and was a member of the Lusk BPO Elks Lodge.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Walter N. and Acy.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; sons, Jim and Tom, brothers, Ray of Lance Creek and Joe of Watford City, N. Dak.; sisters, Frankie Hern of Douglas and Faye Russell of Cheyenne; six grandchildren and many other relatives.
