Roy Schutt

Funeral services for Roy Schutt, 85, were held March 28, 2003, at the Edgemont Baptist Church in Edgemont, S.D. Burial followed at the Edgemont Cemetery.

Roy Schutt died March 23, 2003 at Ft. Meade Veterans' Administration medical facility in Sturgis, S.D.

Roy was born Aug. 19, 1917, to Otto and Elizabeth Schutt in Granada, Minn.

The family moved to Burdock, S.D., in 1919, and stayed at a homestead house named the Guthrie House for about a year before moving to their homestead near Mule Creek, Wyo.

Roy started school in 1923. He attended the Fuchs School until 1925, when a new one-room school was built, where he attended until 1929, at which time the family moved to Marietta, S.D.

Roy finished his eighth grade education at the Dutton School in 1932.

Roy moved back to the Mule Creek homestead in the spring of 1933. He worked wherever he was needed, putting up ice in the winters, hauling sand, farming and haying in the summers, until he enlisted in the National Guard in Edgemont, S.D., on Sept. 25, 1940.

Roy entered active service duty Feb. 10, 1941. He spent the remainder of 1941 at Camp Claiborne, La. On Jan. 26, 1942, he left port in New York for Belfast, Ireland. His tour of duty included North Africa and Italy. He was honorably discharged in April 1945. He received a Purple Heart during his tour of duty.

Roy married Doris Pearson on his birthday, Aug. 19, 1946, in Lusk, Wyo. They lived at Mule Creek, where Roy worked in the oilfield, until 1961. They then moved to Edgemont, S.D., where Roy worked at the uranium mill until his retirement in 1989.

He served on the ambulance crew and as a fire fighter and fire chief for the Edgemont Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a charter member of the Edgemont Trap Club, a Life member of the NRA, and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Roy most valued his family and his country. He was very proud to be an American and knew what it meant to fight for our county and our freedom.

Roy loved to go fishing and spent a lot of his spare time taking his children and grand children fishing. His hobbies also included trap shooting and guns.

He was preceded in death by his parents: his brother Alfred, who was killed in action in WWII; and his wife Doris, who died Jan 17, 1999.

He is survived by two sons, Alfred Schutt of Edgemont, S.D., and Phil Schutt of Moorcroft, Wyo.; two daughters, Ellen Simons and Arlene Simons, both of Gillette, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his huntin' dog "Skeeter." Memorials may be directed to the Edgemont Trap Club.
