Russell Raymond Shippen

Funeral services for Russell Raymond "Scrub" Shippen, 69, were Wednesday, May 6 at the Converse Funeral Chapel with Rev. Delbert Dick officiating. Burial was in the Douglas Park Cemetery with the Samuel Mares American Legion Post No. 8 conducting military graveside rites.

Mr. Shippen died Sunday, May 3, 1987 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cheyenne after a short illness.

He was born May 26, 1917 at Lance Creek, the son of Cody D. and Daisy (Howard) Shippen. He was raised on his parents' ranch northeast of Lost Springs. In 1924 the family moved to a ranch southwest of Lost Springs. He received his education at the Lost Springs schools. In his early manhood he did ranch work for various ranchers in the area.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the Third Infantry in 1943. He was discharged in 1945, after he received a critical injury. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. He spent some time in overseas hospitals and when arriving back in the U.S., he spent some time in the Staten Island Hospital in New York. After being discharged from the service, he again worked on area ranches.

In about 1975 he received full disability, so he devoted his time to the care of his home and yard, until ill health two years ago prevented it. He was married to Julia Donovan, Oct. 17, 1953 in Lusk. She preceded him in death Nov. 24, 1984. He was a member of the Samuel Mares American Post No, 8 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Mason and her husband, Clarence Mason of Manville, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Rena Shippen.

A memorial to the Samuel Mares American Legion Post No. 8, in care of the Converse Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 874, Douglas, Wyo. 82633, would be appreciated.

The Converse Funeral Chapel in Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.
