Fay Swope, 60, Dies Thursday

Fay Swope, 60, Lusk, died April 30 at Douglas, following a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted from the Peet Chapel in Lusk Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with burial in the Lusk Cemetery. The Rev. Delbert Dick of Wheatland officiated. Mrs. J. P. Watson, organist, accompanied soloist, Robert Reichert, as he sang "Beyond The Sunset" and "I Saw A Man."

Casket bearers were Dan Christian, Ernest Hales, Dan Jordan, Earl Townsend, Glen Parmely and Charles Lewis.

Mr. Swope was the son of Charles and Mattie Swope and was born September 22, 1909 at Crawford, Neb. When a year old his family moved to the Indian Creek community where they homesteaded. He spent his early years breaking horses and selling them in Niobrara and Converse areas. He had many tales of this and the days he worked along the Platte River to tell his children and grandchildren.

March 9, 1935 he married Genevieve VanBlarcum at her parents' home in the Indian Creek. He then worked around Pinedale, Wyo. and south of Lusk. He moved back to his father's home after the death of his mother in 1941. Here he took up ranching and carried mail from Harrison to the Indian Creek from 1941-53. He also drove the Indian Creek school bus for several years. He moved to Lusk in 1967 due to poor health. His daughter and son-in-law Claudetta and Dick Tollman have operated his ranch for him during this period.

His parents, one sister and one brother died previously.

Survivors include his widow of the family home; four daughters, Yvonne of Lusk; Dolores Hanzlik, Newcastle, June Widick, Douglas and Claudetta Tollman, Indian Creek; three sons-in-law, Gene Hanzlik, Chuck Widick and Dick Tollman; two brothers, Walter, Lusk and Bill, Centralia, Wash.; two sisters, Cora Leeling, Manville and Velma Hamlin, St. Maries, Idaho; 13 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
