Helen L. Veirs

Helen L. Veirs, former resident of Lusk and a resident of Billings, Mont., for three years died Dec. 5 at Parkview Convalescent Center. Memorial services will be held at Bader-Peet Mortuary on Friday, Dec. 11, 1992, at 2 p.m.

She was born July 6, 1895, in Denver, Colo., the younger daughter of August F. and Katherine Krohl Uebelhoer and spent her youth with her parents and sister Margaret in that city. She graduated from West Denver High School in 1913 and attended Woodworth College for one year.

On March 9, 1920, she married Charles W. (Bill) Hahn, formerly of Frederick, Md., at the family home. During World War I Bill was an infantryman in the U. S. Army and at the war's conclusion, he was discharged and was employed by the newspaper in Ponca City, Okla., where their first daughter, Elizabeth (Betty), was born Jan. 20, 1921.

The Hahns then moved to Denver, where Margery Jean was born June 17, 1922.

Being a newspaperman, Hahn aspired to owning a weekly paper and purchased several small papers before moving to Denver. Hahn was born in Haigler, Neb., on Sept. 8, 1924.

The Hahns finally purchased "The Wheatland Times" published in Wheatland, Wyo. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Hahn continued to publish the paper until her marriage to Dr. J.B. Veirs, a dentist living in Lusk, Wyo., on Oct. 19, 1937.

Later the family moved to Great Falls, Mont., and then to Scobey, Mont.

Dr. Veirs died Jan. 3, 1963, and for three years Mrs. Veirs lived in Billings, employed as a counselor by Rocky Mountain College. She then moved back to Lusk and remained there until late 1989 when she moved to Billings.

She is survived by her son, Richard F. Hahn, Billings; son-in-law, Walter C. Fernau, Borrego Springs, Calif.; six grandchildren; John C. Fernau, Elkton, Md.; Margylou Fernau, Lusk and Joe Fernau, Casper; Thomas K. Hahn, Billings; Gregory Hahn, Las Vegas, Nev. and Margery Jean Cerovski, Boise, Idaho and nine great-grandchildren.

Cremation has already taken place in Billings.

Services are being held in Lusk because she spent so many years there with her many friends. Memorials may be made to the Niobrara County Public Library or St. George's Episcopal Church.
