Mrs. Emma Porter Dies at Douglas

Mrs. Emma Jane Porter, formerly of Lusk, died at Douglas Friday, April 27, with burial being in Harrison Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Porter is the mother-in-law of Mrs. Marie Porter of Jay Em.

Emma Jane Sherrill was born Apr. 26, 1874 at Watseka, Ill. She lived with her family in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. She was married to Leslie Crane Aug. 3, 1890 at Harrison. On Nov. 26, 1901, she was married to Samuel E. Porter. They lived in Lusk until Mr. Porter's death in 1929 at which time Mrs. Porter moved to Douglas being employed there as housekeeper for Marcus Graves.

She was a member of the Church of God and the Rebekah Lodge. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Elva McGonagle, Arlington, Mass.; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Dunn, Denver; Mrs. Hattie Bourret, Bridger, Mont.; Mrs. Josephine Kennedy, Crawford, and Mrs. Edna Bradford, Grand Junction, Colo.; two brothers, Ellery and Louis Sherrill, of Harrison; two stepdaughters, a stepson, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted from the Stark funeral chapel at 10:00 a.m. in Douglas Tuesday. Services were conducted at Harrison at 2:00 that afternoon with burial made in the cemetery there.

Funeral Services For Emma Porter

Funeral services were conducted May 1 for Mrs. Emma Jane Porter, 77, who died at Douglas April 27 after being in ill health for a number of years. Burial was made at Harrison.

Services were conducted at Douglas at 10:00 a.m. May 1 at Stark funeral chapel. Mrs. Edna Finney and Mrs. Glenn Burris sang "In the Garden" and Rev. Glenn Burris sang "Beyond the Sunset." Accompaniments were by Mrs. Terry Cook at the piano. Honorary pallbearers for the funeral were Leonard Shaw, Tony Funk, Lloyd Bruegman, Bill Lindmier, Vern McNare and Ferris Bruner.

At 2:00 that afternoon services were conducted and burial was made in Harrison. Six of Mrs. Porter's nephews acted as casket bearers. They were: Morris and Gerald Kennedy, Henry, Lester, Vernon and Arthur Dunn.

Emma Jane Sherrill was born April 26, 1874, at Watseka, Ill., the daughter of John and Lucy Sherrill. At the age of nine, she moved with her parents to Ida Grove, Iowa, then to Harrison in 1888. She attended school in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska.

Emma Jane Sherrill was married to Leslie Crane August 3, 1890. They were the parents of a daughter. The Cranes lived on a ranch but later moved to Harrison. Mr. Crane preceded his wife in death.

November 26, 1902, she was married to Samuel E. Porter. They made their home in Lusk for a number of years where she operated a dress making and millinery store. They moved to Wasta, South Dakota, where they were in business for a number of years. The Porters later moved to Spearfish, South Dakota, where they were managing a rooming house. Mr. Porter died November 26, 1929. The following May, Mrs. Porter moved to Douglas, where she had been employed as housekeeper for Marcus Nelson until her death.

While living at Wasta, So. Dak., she was converted to the Church of God. She was a member of the Lusk Rebekah Lodge No. 12 and a past grand of the organization.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Elva McGonale, Arlington, Mass.; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Dunn, Denver; Mrs. Hattie Bourret, Bridger, Mont.; Mrs. Josephine Kennedy, Crawford; and Mrs. Edna Bradford, Grand Junction, Colo.; two brothers, Ellery and Louis Sherill, both of Harrison; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lona Peacock, Riverton and Mrs. Etta Taylor, Lynwood, Calif.; one stepson, Roy H. Porter, Lusk; one granddaughter, one grandson and two great grandchildren.

One stepson, Rollie E. Porter of Jay Em, died November 14, 1942.
