Services for Rolla Porter Conducted

Funeral services for Rolla E. Porter, 58, who died December 14 at his home, will be conducted this afternoon (Thursday) at 2:30 at Jay Em, and interment will be made at the same place. Rev. Millard H. Marshall of the Lusk Congregational church will conduct the services and Custer Lodge, I.O.O.F. will participate in the commitment service at the grave. The Peet Mortuary will be in charge.

Mr. Porter was born November 30, 1884, in Boone County, Iowa. He homesteaded in the Jay Em community in 1908 and has lived in Goshen county since that time. He was for a time associated with Lake Harris in the lumber business in Jay Em.

Mr. Porter is widely known in this community, where he has made a host of friends who will regret to hear of his death. He has been ill for several months and his death was not unexpected.

Surviving relatives include his wife Mrs. Marie Anna Porter; one brother Roy of Manville and two sisters Leona of Washington state, and Etta of California. It is not known whether or not either of the sisters will be able to attend the funeral services for Mr. Porter.

Services Held for Rolla E. Porter

Funeral services for Rolla Porter were held in Jay Em December 17 with the Rev. Millard Marshall of Lusk officiating. There was a short service at the cemetery by the I.O.O.F. Lodge.

Pallbearers were: Walter Rymill, Bunt Alter, Walter Tyrrel, James Shoults, Grover Cameron, Joe Waggoner, James Vondra and Kenneth Kirby.

Three songs were sung: "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" by Mesdames Lake Harris, James Shoults, Otto Vondra, Grover Cameron and Messers. Lee Applegate and Reuben Hahn with Mrs. Gene Browder accompanying.

Rolla Edgar Porter was born November 30, 1884, in Boone County, Iowa. He came to Wyoming in May 1895 where they lived near Hat Creek, what is now the Percival place.

When eighteen years old he went to Bridgeport, Nebr., where he worked for a telephone company. He was married to Marie Windsheimer July 29, 1908, at Sidney, Nebraska.

The couple returned the same year to Lusk, Wyoming, where he filed on a homestead sixteen miles south of Lusk. Later, selling his homestead he returned to Lusk, where he operated a restaurant, disposing of his restaurant interest he moved to the Hileman place north of Jay Em. He carried the mail from Lusk to Torrington, for four years.

He later entered the grocery and lumber business, in partnership with Lake Harris. He then moved to the place he now owns north of Jay Em, where he lived until the time of his death.

On October 24, 1942, he became ill and was taken to the Lusk hospital and from there to the Denver hospital.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of Lusk, also the I.O.O.F. of Lusk, and the Modern Woodmen of Jay Em.

He was always jolly and always had a good word for everybody and he was a friend of everyone who knew him. He was a kind consciencious and faithful husband.

Services were held in Jay Em, with Rev. Marshall officiating with a short service at the cemetery by the I.O.O.F. Lodge, on December 17, 1942.

Preceding him in death was his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Porter, and a small sister, Edith. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Marie, his brother Roy of Manville, sisters Leona Peacock of Bremerton, Wash., Etta Taylor, of South Gate, Calif.; his step mother Mrs. Emma Porter of Douglas, Wyo.; step sister Mrs. Alva McConagle of Arlington, Mass., one niece Mrs. Ilene Ellis and nephews, Floyd Fost of Casper, and Max, Sam, and Roylesley Porter of Crawford, Nebr.

One of this locality's most prominent and highly respected citizens, Rolla Edgar Porter, passed away at his ranch home, 16 miles southeast of this city at 7:45 a.m., Monday, December 14th, to spread a shroud of sorrow over relatives and hundreds of friends. Mr. Porter had been in failing health for the past several months and had been under treatment for cerebral sarcoma for weeks, both here and in Denver. He had reached the age of 58 years and 14 days at the time of demise.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Marie, his step-mother, Mrs. Emma Porter of Douglas, one brother, Roy of Manville; and two sisters, Etta, who resides in California, and Lona, of Bremerton, Wash.

Funeral services were held from the community hall at Jay Em this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Millard H. Marshall, pastor of the Lusk congregational Christian church in charge. Interment was made in the Jay Em cemetery.

Mr. Porter was born in Boone County, Iowa, but when a young man moved westward. On July 29, 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Anna Windsheimer at Sidney, Nebr., and shortly afterwards moved to this locality. Here he made a host of friends through his genial personality and considerate ideas of his fellowmen, thus earning the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

For many years he operated a ranch on the present home site, and except for a year or two during which he managed a store at Jay Em, he was considered one of this community's most substantial ranchmen.

In these columns next week will be found a more complete review of Mr. Porter's life, and in the meantime, his many friends and acquaintances unite in extending to the bereaved family their heartfelt sympathies.
