Funeral Services For Mrs. Norris Hartwell Held Sat.

Funeral services for Mrs. Norris E. Hartwell were held from the Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne Saturday. Mrs. Hartwell died of a blood clot in the heart January 8. Mr. Hartwell has been State Examiner since 1941. The family is well known here and even though Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell have lived in Cheyenne since 1938 they always thought of Lusk as their home and maintained their legal residence here.

Mrs. Hartwell was born March 10, 1889, at Ames, Iowa. She attended schools there and then entered Drake University, at Des Moines, where she majored in music, specializing in piano, and was graduated with honors and a degree in that field.

In 1912 she joined her parents, who had moved to a ranch near Crawford, and was employed by the Commercial State bank in that city. Here she met Mr. Hartwell, who was employed in the First National Bank and they were married Feb. 23, 1914. That year they moved to Lusk where Mr. Hartwell was cashier and managing officer of the Bank of Lusk. In 1923 they moved to Douglas, where he had accepted the position of vice-president of the First National Bank, but returned to Lusk about a year later to enter the abstracting and insurance business. In 1938 they moved to Cheyenne and have made their home there since.

A daughter, Orpha, was born in November, 1915, but died at the age of three. A son, Norris Jr., was born in 1921. He served with honor during World War II and is now a lieutenant colonel on duty with the air force at Luke AFB, near Phoenix, Ariz.

Mrs. Hartwell was a member and past matron of Niobrara Chapter No. 26 Order of Eastern Star, and past president of Chapter I P.E.O. Sisterhood at Lusk. She was active in P.E.O. in Cheyenne and helped form Chapter Z in Cheyenne.

In lieu of flowers for the services Hartwells requested that donations be given to the P.E.O. scholarship fund.

Mrs. Hartwell was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and many other social and civic organizations, taking an active part in them until serious injuries received in an automobile accident in 1929 impaired her health and prevented full participation.

Her husband is well known throughout the state. He served as secretary to Gov. Nels Smith for two years and was appointed state examiner in 1941, a post in which he has served continuously to this date.

He is also active in civic and fraternal organizations, especially in Masonry. He became a member of Harmony Lodge No. 24, AF and AM, Lusk, in 1919, where he is a past master and also served in other capacities. He is a member of Wyoming Consistory No. 1, and has received the honorary degree of KCCH. He also is a member of the Shrine Korein Temple at Rawlins.
