Capt. Al Barnes Dies of gun Wounds

Capt. Al Barnes, formerly of Fort Robinson, passed away Friday March 17th at Fort Sheridan, Ill., from the effects of gunshot wounds.

Mrs. Barnes was the former Miss Neva Hartwell of Crawford and her sister, Miss Ethelynm Hartwell, left at once for Chicago upon receiving word of the tragedy.

N.E. Hartwell formerly of Lusk but now of Cheyenne, is a brother-in-law of Capt. Barnes.

Mrs. Barnes and Miss Hartwell accompanied the body to McCook, Nebr., the former home of the deceased.

Captain Barnes, 42, enlisted as a private in the World War in 1918, remaining in the army following the war, and was named captain in the Third Field artillery in 1934. He was stationed at Fort Robinson from June, 1932 to June, 1936 where he served as adjutant of the post, being very (capable) with much responsibility. He was married to Miss Neva Hartwell in May 1933.

A dispatch from Chicago states that a military board of inquiry was appointed Saturday to investigate the death of the supply officer, for they were unable to determine whether Barnes was shot accidentally or committed suicide.

The military funeral was held at Fort Sheridan Monday, and the body taken to McCook for burial. The funeral was held there Wednesday, where his brother, T. F. Barnes, is editor and publisher of the McCook Republican.

He is survived by his wife, Neva, his mother, Mrs. Charles Barnes of McCook, his brother, T. F. Barnes, and a sister, Mrs. Julia Weidman, both of McCook.
