Dr. J.E. Hartwell Dies At Age of 102

Dr. J.E. Hartwell, age 102 years, passed away at the Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne on November 20, after a few weeks illness.

Dr Hartwell, pioneer physican of Crawford, Neb., was the father of the late Attorney John Garrett Hartwell, Norris E. Hartwell, Sr., and Ethelyn Hartwell all former Lusk residents. He often visited his children while they were living in Lusk, and was well known to many people here.

Born in Franklin County, Virginia, on July 22, 1847, he lived there until 22 years of age. In 1876 he was married to Nancy Ellen Wygall of Newburn, Va., and they were the parents of one daughter, Ruby. Shortly after his marriage he moved to Sydnorsville, Va., where he served as postmaster, until 1880, when his wife died.

He then moved back in his oldhome and taught school for a time, after which he entered Virginia Medical College, receiving his license to practice in the fall of 1883.

On Feb. 18, 1885, he was married to Nancy Ellen Stuart of Basham, Va., and they became the parents of four children.

Dr. Hartwell practiced medicine 1890, when he again entered medical college, this time the Baltimore Medical College. After his graduation he brough his family to Crawford, Neb. In 1892, and practiced medicine in that city and surrounding country for nearly 50
years.

After the death of his wife in 1940 he moved to Cheyenne to make his home with his daughter, Ethylyn.

During his life time in Crawford he held many offices of public service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 70 years, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Royal Neighbors. He was a member and untiring worker in the Congregational Church.

During the Spanish-American war he was acting physician and surgeon at Fort Robinson and was chairman of the U.S. Pensioners for Dawes County.

His son, Attorney John Garrett Hartwell of Lusk, preceded his father in death in 1934.

Survivors are his three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Beatty of Crawford, Neb.; Ethylyn Hartwell of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Major Neva B. Maiser of Camp Lee, Va,; one son, Norris E. Hartwell, Sr., State Examiner of Cheyenne, Wyo., and two grandsons, Norris E. Hartwell of Denver, Colo., and John Garrett Hartwell of Treasure Island, Calif.; one brother, B.F. Hartwell of Hardy, Va.

Funeral services were conducted at Crawford on Tuesday, Nov. 22, from the Houston Funeral Home, with interment in the cemetery there, with the Masonic services being used.
