E.A. Hitz Came Here in 1909

Ewald A. Hitz, 79, of Lusk, died Friday in the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. Jacob Nein officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

A mixed quartet composed of Neoma Taylor, Miss Phyllis Johns, Dr. Richard Collins and E. E. Davenport sang "Beyond the Sunset", "Rock of Ages" and "God Be With You". Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist.

Active pallbearers were Emil Klemke, Henry McGinnis, W. D. Miller, Roy Turnbull, Frank Taylor and Harry Cornell. Honorary pallbearers were Albert DeGering, C. E. Marvin, James Mudra, Henry Lenz and Gilbert Brinckerhoff.

Ewald August Hitz was born December 17, 1879 in Germany. He came to the United States from Germany at the age of 10. He moved overland from New York to Tulare, S. D. and lived there with his parents for approximately two years. From there he moved to Hosmer, S. D. with an ox team. He served as a county commissioner and member of the school board while living in Hosmer.

He came to Wyoming in 1909 with his parents and took up ranching. He was also engaged in windmill repairing. He was a member of the Stockgrowers Association in 1915.

Since retiring 15 years ago he has made his home with his youngest brother Walter and has been interested in his hobbies of hunting, fishing and rock collecting. He received his first hunting license in 1911. He was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Hosmer.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter and Herman Hitz and two sisters, Margaret Haight and Mrs. Emerson Himes. His parents, one brother and five sisters previously died.
