Mrs. Amend Dies in Douglas Fri.; Funeral Sun.

Mrs. Gladys Amend, 54, of Lost Springs died of cancer in the Converse County Memorial Hospital at Douglas Friday.

Her death came after a long struggle against cancer and was an especially heart rendering time for her daughter, Mary, will be graduated from NCHS Monday. NCHS seniors attended the funeral services in a body.

Funeral services were held from the Peet Chapel in Lusk Sunday with Rev. James Davis, minister of the Lusk Congregational Church officiating. Mrs. Joan Harbison of Lance Creek sang "The Lord's Prayer" and "My Father Watches Over Me". She was accompanied by Mrs. A. F. DeCastro on the organ. The Mariposa Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Manville conferred memorial rites in the chapel.

Active pallbearers were Gene Harris, Ted Pennington, Dan Diehlman, Larry Eddy, Melvin Nelson, Wilmer Baars.

Honorary pallbearers were Ed Sanman, Wilbur Wright, Leonard Gilbert, Harry Manning, Charles Reese, Roy Elder.

Gladys Sims was born October 20, 1908 in Santa Cruz, Calif. to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sims. Her childhood years were spent in Manville and on her parents' ranch on Twenty Mile Creek. She graduated from Manville High School with the class of 1926. After teaching for one year in a rural school she attended college at San Jose, Calif. and returned to Manville to teach for two years.

On May 31, 1930 she became the bride of Henry F. Amend. In 1938 Amends purchased a ranch two miles south of Lost Springs where they have resided ever since.

In the Lost Springs community she was especially active in the religious education of young people, although she was active in all community activities. She taught a Shawnee Church school class for many years and participated in the Shawnee-Lost Springs Bible study class for ten years. She was a member of the 5280 Extension Club of Keeline and an active member of the Mariposa Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband, Henry; one son, Marvin; two daughters, Mae Ann Manning and Mary of the family home, and two grandchildren, Alvin and Debra Manning. Also two sisters, Mrs. Edna Fullerton of Manville and Mrs. Delberta Simpson of Madera, Calif., and one brother Cecil R. Sims of Byron, Mich.
