Hugh L. McLean

Services for Hugh L. McLean, 80, will be held today, March 24, 1993, at 2 p.m. at the Bader-Peet Mortuary Chapel.

McLean died Sunday, March 21, 1993, at the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital in Lusk. He was born April 13, 1912, in Osceola, Neb., the son of Frank and Lottie McLean. His mother died in 1920, leaving five children. McLean's father later married Nancy Dieleman and to this union two children were born, Frank and Ruth. The family moved to Wyoming in 1926 and settled near the Keeline area, later moving to Manville.

In 1937, he married Clarice Rice. To this union three children were born, Gurney of Brookings, Ore.; Clair of Lusk, Wyo. and Reda Butler of Sheridan, Wyo. In 1942, the family moved to Lance Creek where Hugh was employed by the Argo Oil Company. Clarice died in 1950.

In 1952, Hugh married Elma Boyles. The family remained in Lance Creek. Hugh worked for an independent oil company owned by Bob Six, Jimmy Stewart, Ethel Merman and Bing Crosby, who became acquaintances.

Hugh worked for many independent oil companies until 1959 when he and his youngest son, Clair, formed their own trucking business. In later years, he became involved in ranching, retiring in 1977, and moving to Lusk where he and his wife maintained the Lady Bird Rest Area for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Elma; his children, Gurney McLean, Clair McLean and Reda Butler; 10 grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Erma Clark, Glen McLean, Frank McLean, Ruth Dorr, Isabelle Green and Art Dieleman and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
