Lloyd Miller

Lloyd Miller, Mayor of Manville for the past six years and member of the Niobrara School Board for 20 years, died last Thursday in the V. A. Hospital in Denver following extensive heart surgery.

Mr. Miller had resigned his post on the school board, because of health reasons effective with the primary election Sept. 14. Jay Smith was elected to finish out Miller's unexpired term.

John Overman, acting mayor of Manville said that he expects a mayor will be designated at the regular Oct. 5 meeting of the Council. Ordinarily a mayor is selected from the elected council members and a new councilman is appointed.

Lloyd Hugh Miller was born January 1, 1922, at Lusk, the son of George and Ollie Miller.

Mr. Miller attended grade school at Hat Creek and high school at Lusk. He was called to active duty with the National Guard on Sept. 16, 1940. He later transferred to Company F-363rd Engineers and served three years in Iran on the Persian Gulf. He was discharged in 1945.

He was a charter member of the William D. McKibben Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 7462 of Lance Creek. He also was a charter and life member of the Bryant Kant V.F.W. Post No. 10390 of Manville-Lance Creek. He served on the Niobrara County School Board for 20 years and was the mayor of Manville for six years. He was active in many community affairs, especially sports, team roping, and rodeo. He was active in ranching and livestock raising for a number of years.

On November 27, 1946, Lloyd Miller and Maxine Johnson were married.

The Rev. Frank Blish officiated at the memorial service for Mr. Miller Monday afternoon at Peet Mortuary Chapel. Music was provided by Mark Lohr who sang "One Day at a Time" and the "Last Roundup" and Elizabeth Craske on the organ.

Active pallbearers were James Kruse, Alvin Manning, Jack Green, Ray Taylor, Dale Gunn, and Burr Bryant. Honorary bearers included the Manville Town Council, Niobrara County School Board of Trustees, The V.F.W. members and all of his many friends.

A memorial fund has been established to the Throat Culture program which is under the auspices of the Lusk Elks Lodge members.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife Maxine of Manville; sons Harold of Lance Creek and Gary of Douglas; daughter Gloria Buell of Baker, Mont.; his father G. M. Miller of Lusk; four sisters, Cleo Leffingwell Green of Thermopolis, Lila Stratton of Lance Creek, June Terrel of Lusk, and Jeanie Mathews of Thermopolis; brothers Don of Riverton and Jack of Lusk; six grandsons and one granddaughter.
