Graveside services for Frances W. (Sides) Shafer, age 84, of Grand Rapids, Mich., were held Nov. 5, 2008, at the Lusk Cemetery in Lusk, Wyo., with Pastor David Shaner officiating. Frances passed away in Grand Rapids on Oct. 25, 2008. Funeral services were held in Grand Rapids on Oct. 29, 2008.

Frances Wyoma Shafer was born in Lusk Sept. 13, 1924, to Earl Eugene and Florence Frances (Fancher) Sides. After graduating from Manville High School in Manville, Wyo., she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., and worked for Lockheed Aircraft during WWII. It was in California that she met the love of her life, Judd Shafer. They were married on April 9, 1944. She lived in Sylmar and Costa Mesa, Calif. for most of her life, and then moved to Michigan to be with her children.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Sides and Florence Vaughn; her husband Judd; and brothers Bob and Jim Sides. She is survived by her children: Sherry Appeldorn of Jackson, Wyo.; Gregory and Lola Shafer, and Robert and Linda Shafer of Grand Rapids, Mich.; grandchildren Randy and Tyler Appeldorn, James Shafer, Richard Shafer, Lisa and Tim Lobbezzo, and Dan Shafer; great-grandchildren Gavin, Fletcher, Ashlei, Alissa, and Max; brother Earl Sides and his wife Jeannie of Casper, Wyo.; sister Shirley Martin and her husband Earl of Pinedale, Wyo., and special relatives: Mike and Lori Knorr and his children Michael, Tracey, and Matt; and Maxine Knorr of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Pier Funeral Home is in charge of the Lusk arrangements.
