James Hammell Dies Thursday

James T. Hammell, 83, of Edgemont, died March 12 in Hot Springs from a heart condition. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. Jacob Nein officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

A mixed trio composed of Mrs. Emerson Bonner, E. E. Davenport and Jess Rice sang "Home on the Range" and "Old Rugged Cross." Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist.

Active pallbearers were James Rumney, Sam Rennard, Leonard Sedgwick, James Coates, Pat Marchant and LeRoy Black. Honorary pallbearers were Ted Rumney, Joe Rumney, Billy Hansen, Charles Hansen, Chris Christensen and William Spencer.

James Thompson Hammell was born April 26, 1875 at Bainbridge, York County, England, the son of James and Dorothy Hammell.

In his youth he came to Canada and the United States and for some time worked in the vicinity of Cheyenne, later locating on the Cheyenne River in northern Niobrara County where he homesteaded in 1901.

He and Isabelle Groggins were married May 22, 1903 at Hot Springs. They were the parents of two sons and one daughter.

Survivors include Harold of northern Niobrara County, Thomas of Edgemont, Mrs. Doris Bolin of Ketchikan, Alaska, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Hammell died in 1943.
