Faye Mershon Heumier

Faye Mershon Heumier was born Oct. 16, 1893, in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana, the youngest child of Quinn Q. and Tabitha Dils Mershon. She died Sept. 27, 1989, at her home in Lusk, Wyoming. Interment will be in the Lusk Cemetery.

Faye graduated from high school at Monrovia, Indiana, in 1912, then attended Central Normal College in Danville, Indiana. She moved west with her parents to Harrison, Nebraska in the fall of 1913. She taught schools at Glen and Unit, Nebraska, and went to summer sessions at Chadron State College. After marrying and moving to Wyoming, she taught at the Bliss School three miles from the Heumier homestead for a short period of time in 1917.

She married Charles H. Heumier on Jan. 5, 1916, at Harrison, Nebraska. In March they moved to their acquired homestead north of Lusk. Together they built up and operated a successful ranching business for the next 50 years. Whey they retired, they moved to their home in Lusk, where Faye resided until her death. She was very proud of the fact that she had been a resident of Niobrara County these many years.

Having been baptized into the Christian faith as a young girl, she was confirmed as a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1949. She was an active member of the Lutheran Ladies Aide, and a charter member of the Divide Tumbleweed Home Extension Club for more than 50 years.

She corresponded with many relatives and friends, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. In December, 1982, an article in the Lusk Herald, profiling her life, stated she "lived a life founded on Faith, Happiness, courage and involvement."

Charles preceded her in death on July 13, 1976. She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Faye of Lusk and Cheyenne, and three sons; Robert Mershon of Torrington, Charles Quinn of Lusk, and Donald Phil of Spokane, Wash. One grandson preceded her in death. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Lusk, or to the Niobrara Senior Center, Lusk.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 1989. Pastor Bradley Smith and Beauford Anderson officiated. Arrangements were by the Peet Mortuary.
