Charles Herman Heumier

Memorial service was held here Friday for Charles Herman Heumier, a Niobrara resident since 1914. The Rev. B. L. Anderson conducted the service held at the Peet Mortuary Chapel.

Organist was Mrs. Ruth Hahn, and the Lutheran Youth for Christ choir of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church sang "I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus," and "Blest Be The Tie That Binds." The mourners sang "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me."

Casket bearers were Leonard DeGering, Martin Glandt, Ernie Hansen, Gene Lenz, Richard Lenz, Arch Liberty, Ralph Lingwood and Ted Lohr. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Chas. H. Heumier was born March 12, 1890, in Dawes County, Nebraska, near Sugarloaf. His parents, Carl and Caroline (Gundloch) Heumier were born and raised at Wilstock, Brandenburg, Germany. They immigrated to America in 1883, accompanied by their three oldest daughters. Chas. was the ninth child to be born into a family of fifteen. Nine sisters and a younger brother grew to adulthood, but all have preceded him in death.

He grew up in a log cabin home about 14 miles northeast of Harrison at the head of Soldier Creek. While still a boy he started working for neighboring ranchers to help support his family. Later he worked for the U. S. Cavalry at Ft. Robinson, and for a brief time carried mail from Crawford to Unit, Nebraska.

He first came to Niobrara County in June 1914, having acquired the relinquishment of 320 acres of homestead land about six miles northwest of Lusk. On January 5, 1916, he married Faye Mershon at Harrison, and two months later they moved to the homestead which was to be their ranch home for the next 50 years. Together they built up and operated a successful ranching business, raising white face cattle and draft horses. Here, also, they made a home for their four children. Ten years ago they retired from the ranch and moved to Lusk, where they have since made their home.

Chas. was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age and confirmed into the Lutheran Church on March 16, 1912. He remained a faithful member until his death.

He is survived by his widow Faye and children Robert Mershon of Ft. Washakie, Wyo., Harriet Faye of Cheyenne and Lusk, Charles Quinn of Brigham City, Utah, and Donald Phil presently residing in Guam; eleven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
